Community Engagement Manager

Build a Community of People Who Want to Make a Difference

Vancouver

Hybrid

The Company

Our client is a growing BC-based nonprofit organization focused on improving food security for children and families across the province.

Its work is powered by a broad community of volunteers, schools, corporate partners, donors, and community organizations who come together every week to support the delivery of essential programs.

With continued growth comes an opportunity to build a more sophisticated approach to volunteer and community engagement — creating the systems, experiences, and opportunities that allow more people to meaningfully participate in the mission.

The Opportunity

This is a role for someone who loves both people and systems.

As Volunteer & Community Engagement Manager, you’ll lead the evolution of a growing volunteer program while creating meaningful ways for individuals, corporate groups, schools, young people, and community partners to get involved.

You’ll build the structure behind the experience — developing systems, workflows, training, communications, and engagement strategies that make volunteering seamless and scalable — while remaining highly visible and hands-on within the community.

You’ll also lead the development of a youth-focused engagement initiative that connects volunteering with education, philanthropy, and community action, while expanding the organization’s presence through events, outreach, and supporter engagement.

If you can build a process from scratch but genuinely enjoy facilitating groups, meeting people, and creating experiences they want to return to, this role offers a unique combination of both.

What You'll Own

  • Lead the development and ongoing management of a scalable volunteer and community engagement program

  • Build systems, processes, policies, workflows, and infrastructure to support a growing volunteer community

  • Coordinate volunteer opportunities for individuals, corporate groups, schools, youth organizations, community partners, and supporters

  • Manage the volunteer journey from registration and onboarding through scheduling, participation, follow-up, and ongoing stewardship

  • Develop volunteer roles, training materials, orientation resources, policies, and procedures

  • Build strategies to recruit, engage, retain, and deepen relationships with volunteers

  • Lead the development of a youth engagement program connecting volunteering, education, philanthropy, and community action

  • Represent the organization through community events, outreach initiatives, fundraising events, and other engagement opportunities

  • Partner closely with Operations, Programming, Fundraising, and CRM teams to align volunteer capacity with organizational needs

  • Use data and reporting to understand participation, retention, capacity, engagement, and opportunities for improvement

What You Bring

  • Experience developing, managing, or growing volunteer, community engagement, youth, events, or similar programs

  • Demonstrated ability to build systems, processes, and workflows within a growing or evolving organization

  • Strong project management and organizational skills

  • A strong understanding of what creates an engaging, accessible, and sustainable volunteer experience

  • Natural relationship-building skills and confidence working with diverse groups and community partners

  • Understanding of fundraising and supporter engagement, with an ability to recognize opportunities to deepen relationships

  • Experience working with volunteer management systems, CRMs, databases, or similar platforms; VOMO experience is an asset

  • Strong written, verbal, facilitation, and presentation skills

  • A proactive, creative, solutions-oriented approach

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams

Why This Role

This is an opportunity to build a critical function within a growing organization and have a visible hand in shaping how thousands of people connect with its mission.

You’ll have the latitude to build stronger systems, create new volunteer opportunities, develop a signature youth engagement program, and design experiences that turn one-time participation into long-term community connection.

  • Purpose-driven work with meaningful community impact

  • Opportunity to build and shape a growing volunteer function

  • High level of creativity, ownership, and autonomy

Outlier's Process

1

Apply

Submit your application through our online portal. A real human reviews every resume - no automated AI filtering here. We assess your experience, background, and alignment with current opportunities. If there’s a strong match, we’ll be in touch with next steps. If not, we keep your profile on file for future roles that may be a better fit. Depending on the scope of the search, Outlier may continue to manage the process end-to-end, or the client may take the lead directly from this point forward. In either case, we ensure a clear handoff and will let you know exactly what to expect next.

2

Outlier Interview

If your background aligns with what our client is looking for, we’ll schedule a live interview. This 30–45 minute conversation is designed to go beyond your resume. We’ll dig into your skills and experience, but more importantly, we want to hear your story - what motivates you, what you’re looking for next, and what makes you stand out. We also use this conversation to discuss compensation expectations upfront, ensuring alignment early and avoiding surprises later in the process.

3

Candidate Submission

Once we’ve met and confirmed alignment, shortlisted candidates are presented to our client. If selected to move forward, you’ll be asked to complete a short (10–15 minute) online assessment. This helps the client better understand your values, motivation, and work style, and supports a more thoughtful, well-rounded hiring decision.

4

Client Interviews and Beyond

Once candidates move forward, our clients review a well-rounded view of your profile — including your experience, our interview perspective, and assessment insights. From there, they identify who they’d like to meet directly. We act as an advocate and connector throughout, ensuring your strengths are clearly represented and that you’re supported with preparation, context, and timely feedback at every step. For finalist candidates, we further manage background checks, facilitate offers, and support on-boarding, providing support and acting as your coach right until the end.
